The Cuban frita is our version of the hamburger, a snack that was eaten very frequently in old Cuba, at any time of day and with huge demand. It is believed that the first frita stand in Havana was on the corner of Paseo and Zapata, on the borders of El Vedado.
Today it is no longer so popular on the Island, because its ingredients are hard to find, but at home it can be prepared just like the ones from the stands of yesteryear.

Method
The fritas
- Mix the ground meats with the pepper, garlic paste and a little salt.
- Form the fritas with the mixture and set them aside.
- Heat oil in a skillet. When very hot, add the fritas and avoid flattening them.
- Cook over medium heat on both sides until they reach your preferred doneness.
The battered onion rings
- Prepare a mixture with the flour, egg, beer, garlic paste, salt and pepper. Keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it, for no more than 20 minutes.
- Cut the onion into rings about 2 cm thick and place them in cold water until just before frying.
- Remove the rings from the water and coat them in the batter mixture.
- Heat oil in a deep pot. When very hot, drain the battered rings slightly and fry them so they look nice.
- When golden, remove them and drain on absorbent paper.
Assembly
- Split the bun in half and warm it slightly in a skillet or on a sandwich press.
- Spread your preferred sauce, place the frita on top and finish with cheese and mayonnaise.
- Serve immediately with very finely cut French fries or with the onion rings. Enjoy!
