Guava shells need no introduction: they are one of the most famous desserts in traditional Cuban cuisine. They are easy to make, and their ingredients are easy to find in Cuba, as long as we are in guava season.

Method

  1. Peel the guavas carefully so as not to damage the flesh of the fruit, which will be the shell.
  2. Cut each guava in half and remove the seeds and inner pulp with a small spoon. Reserve the pulp to make juice.

  3. Wash each shell well and place them in a pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil over medium heat.
  4. Add the sugar and cinnamon and continue cooking over medium heat.
  5. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon so it does not stick to the pot.
  6. When the shells are soft and the syrup has reached the desired consistency, remove from heat.
  7. Serve them alone or accompanied by cream cheese or yellow cheese.
